Boys Common Room
Central Hub of Student Life and Activities
History and Establishment
No college is complete without a students' common room. This development was encouraged in the early 20th century by two eminent principals of the college, H.R. James and C. Russell. Consequently, the common room and a separate room for the students' club was established in 1905 by H.R. James. The Calcutta University Committee at that time declared it to be the best.
The government sanctioned Rs. 825 for the initial expenditure and Rs. 300 per year for its maintenance. Professor Jadunath Sarkar became the first secretary of this common room, as desired. A notable event occurred on 17 January 1907, when a meeting was held by the Archaeological Society, electing Pandit Ramawatar Sharma as its first President.
Central Committee
The Central Committee of the Boys Common Room symbolizes the unity of the college. It coordinates various extra-curricular activities across all faculties and departments. The Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Students' Common Room represent this committee, managing all activities.
Indoor Games and Competitions
Various indoor games equipment are arranged in the Boys Common Room, where annual competitions are held. Notable events include the 'All India Gorakhnath Table Tennis' and 'Kaleemuddin Cup Table Tennis' competitions.
The committee also organizes debates at the All India level, along with inter-class competitions of games such as table tennis, carrom, chess, and bridge, fostering student engagement throughout the year.
