Arabic is a dynamic international language of the world, spoken natively by more than 300 million Arabs living in 22 states, fourth language of the world and sixth language of UNO. Its literary heritage is rich. The oil boom in 1920 converted the Arabian Desert into a golden hen. It became a haven for people from all over the world looking for earning quick buck. People from all over the world including India turned to Arab countries for employment that was facilitated by their knowledge of Arabic language. Keeping in view this huge potential of the language, Patna College started the Department of Arabic when it came into existence in 1863 and offered B. A. Classes in Arabic Language and Literature since 1865. It enjoys a high reputation not only in India but also in the Arab world. The Department has a glorious history in which great academicians played a key role as the head in academic excellence of the department and set international academic standards like Prof. Md. Yaseen (Ph.D. Germany), Prof. Amir Hasan, Dr. Azimuddin Ahmad (Ph.D. Leipzig Germany), Dr. A.N.M. Ali Hasan (Ph.D. London), Prof. Abdul Mannan Bedil, Dr. Iqbal Hussain, Dr. Sayed Ahmad (M.A.& D.Lit Cairo, Egypt), Prof. S.A.A. Kazimi, Prof. Md. Amir, Prof. Abdur Rashed, Dr. Md. Shamsuzzoha, Dr. Masud Ahmad Kazimi. Dr. Md. Salim Akhter is the present head of the department. The 3 years semester system under CBCS has been introduced at B.A. level in the department with effect from the Academic Session 2022-2025 while the 4 years semester system under CBCS has been implemented at B.A. level with effect from the Academic Session 2023-2027. The course has been designed in such a way that reflects a high balance between the classical and modern Arabic literature with maximum focus on the language aspect. Translation/Interpretation from English into Arabic and vice-versa is another aspect which is given special attention at various levels of teaching. The Department of Arabic in Patna College is regarded as the main centre for teaching translation which is an extremely important skill & need of the today’s world. The translation can open doors to employment in various industrial sectors and defense departments and Investigation agencies in the government sector.
