Higher Education in Bihar (1867)

Founded in 1867, Patna College's history is deeply intertwined with modern Bihar's educational journey. Initially, it emerged as the region's premier higher education institution but faced significant hurdles in its early years. A major challenge was the exclusion of half of Bihar's population from higher education, compounded by the absence of female students in any state college. Conservative attitudes, including fears of losing caste by residing in college hostels with students from different communities, hindered enrolment. By 1911-12, only eighty-nine students in Bihar and Orissa had earned degrees in Arts and Science, highlighting the scarcity of higher education opportunities. Despite limited resources, Patna College offered Honors-level education in arts and sciences, boasting a teaching staff of just four M.A.-qualified instructors. Despite these challenges, students from Patna College excelled in examinations, and by 1917, the teaching staff had doubled. With the establishment of Patna University, higher education in Bihar and Orissa became more accessible, centralizing educational opportunities in the state capital. Today, Patna University, with ten constituent colleges and thirty-one postgraduate-admission-session departments, remains committed to academic excellence and research, fostering collaborations with Indian and international institutions. The university's focus on inclusivity is evident through its implementation of reservation policies and support for socially and economically disadvantaged students. Co-curricular activities, including the NSS, NCC, and various societies, play a crucial role in students' holistic development, contributing to their remarkable achievements at different levels. Through its dedication to academic excellence, research, and inclusivity, Patna University continues to enrich Bihar's educational landscape and societal development.
